I will do my best to put into words just how lucky we have been to have had this little gelding in our lives all these years. Don’t let his shorter stature fool you, he is one people scramble over to add to their pasture and most will never part with. The decision to offer him has not been an easy one, but he truly deserves to teach a little one how to love and be loved by a horse!
We call this handsome little gelding ShopVac (Shoppy for short). Yes, yes I know…not your average name but let me tell you, it suits him to a T! This fella will lope behind a leaf of alfalfa blowing in the wind, with his nose and inch off the ground, just to slick up the last little morsel. Waste not, want not! Although he has yet to miss a meal.
Shoppy has the epitome of a big, beefy, quarter horse physique. He just got the sawed off legs from his daddy! Shoppy is 11 years old, stands 13.3, and is as shapey as you could EVER ask for! He is plenty big enough for an adult to ride, and more than fancy and patient enough for the kiddos.
I have used Shoppy for EVERYTHING on the ranch, from sorting to pasture doctoring, shipping to branding, and everything in between. He has drug hundreds of calves to the fire and would make a fine teacher for your little ones to learn to rope on! He also helped me learn to rope on the heel side and was VERY forgiving while I practiced missing! Shoppy has logged many a mile on the trails as well and moseys through town like an old parade pony! He is the kind to take to a barrel race, turn your little one loose, and know they are safe while you focus on your own horse!
He was the last horse I rode and trusted to wean calves on when I was 36 weeks pregnant and needed SAFE above all else! He is the same horse be it snow or sand when you climb on. Shoppy is one you can plop your little one on and know he will bring them home safely. He will pony quietly behind mom’s horse, or will ride off on his own for the more independent riders.
Shoppy will lead around with just a hand under his cheek or a treat in your back pocket if you don’t have a halter. He is one who truly loves the company of people and will seek you out any time he spots you out and about! He will whinny each morning when he sees you and will lope off pasture to come visit.
He has one “vice” despite being as close to perfect as you could ever ask for. Every once in a while, he will cinch up a bit tight, might hunch his back and halfheartedly hop two or three times, then take a breath as if to say “phew! I don’t know what got into me!” Then lead right off. It’s one you have to squint and watch because it’s hard to tell if it was a little jump or if he’s giving his best huhched up Halloween cat impression. He has never done ANYTHING with me on him, really only done it a handful of times in all the years I have had him, but I am an open book and want anyone interested to know his personality inside and out!
When I say I would trust him with my baby, I mean every word. There are very few horses I would trust to lope out of their tracks on a cold fall morning, and he is one of them. I can promise you, if his personality doesn’t win you over, his safety factor will solidify your decision!
